Tells of Getting $1,000 From Gang Chief; Also Rented Kidnap House
Criminal Courts Building, Chicago, Jan. 29.-(AP)—One of Roger Touhy's employees, testifying as a state's witness in the Factor kidnaping case, told the jury Monday that Touhy surprised him with a gift of $1,000 on July 14—two days after John Factor, the kidnaping victim, had been released for $70,000 ransom.
The witness was Walter A. "Buck" Henrichsen, a former highway patrolman who left his job to become a beer runner for Touhy and later served as guard for the Touhy children.
The $1,000 was in 10 and 20 dollar bills, Henrichsen said. The Factor ransom was paid in bills of those denominations, earlier witnesses have testified.
"What did he give you the money for," Henrichsen was asked by prosecutor Wilbert F. Crowley.
"To buy a car," Henrichsen responded. He testified that the $1,000 was not salary, that Touhy did not owe him any money, but said Touhy had always promised he would buy Henrichsen a car to repay him for the use of his own, frequently pressed into service on one or another of the beer gang's errands.
Henrichsen's story of the payment was the second telling blow he had delivered. Earlier, he testified he rented a home in suburban Glenview, Ill., which Factor has identified as the one in which he was first imprisoned.
Later in the day on which he received the gift, Henrichsen testified, he saw Andrew McFadden, son of Edward McFadden, one of the alleged members of the Touhy gang charged with the Factor kidnaping. Young McFadden also was well supplied with money, Henrichsen said.
The two celebrated by taking a vacation jaunt to Cass Lake and Lake Winnibigoshish, Minn., and into Canada. They returned after 10 days, the former policeman said.
