POETRY.

Lines on the recent melancholy death of Edwin Philander Peckham.

Why does the mother's stricken heart
Incessantly repine-
Why find it still so hard to part,
And innocence resign?
From sin, from pain, from sorrows torn,
An off'ring due to heaven;
For that blest end the babe was born,
Just lent-but never given.
With tuneful ear, sublime, refin'd
Angelic harps shall hear,
While rapture strikes his opening mind,
When radiant forms appear.
With chaplet twin'd from sacred bowers,
A fragrant wreath he wears:
Not fading, but immortal flowers,
His sacred temples wears.
Himself a flower thus early cropped
Was hurried to the tomb;
Death your sweet Edwin only lopp'd
In Paradise to bloom.
