Napoleon DeMontague, a miner, was killed in the Lance colliery at Plymouth, Pa., while endeavoring to save his fellow workmen from a terrible death. He had fired a shot and ran behind a pillar. When it exploded the flash set fire to some gas near the roof of a chamber communicating with the gangway. Realizing that the fire might spread in a moment through the whole mine, DeMontague tore off his coat and smothered the flames. Just as soon as the fire was extinguished, the roof of the chamber, loosened by the blast, fell upon him. He was extricated as soon as possible, but only to die in the hands of his rescuers. Had the fire spread to the large bodies of gas in the mine, a terrible explosion would have followed, endangering the lives of over 100 men. DeMontague leaves a widow and five children.
