University of Virginia.--We trust the fate of Mr. Taylor's proposition in the H. of D. yesterday is not indicative of the final determination of that body in relation to this noble institution. The promises it has already given of fulfilling the anticipations of its friends; the deep interest it has created among our own citizens; the admiration it has excited, not only in other states, but in distant countries, all call aloud upon the Legislature to finish the buildings that have been already begun. Our interests and our pride as Virginians are at stake. Is it not time that the local jealousies, and the prejudices of men were surrendered at the altar of the public good? What ought an intelligent people to say of that patriotism, which in the present state of the University, would leave it to its own efforts to complete the buildings, or to stand unfinished, a Monument of Virginia fickleness, of Virginia parsimony ? The patronage of this institution does not presuppose that the primary and intermediate Schools are to be neglected. It is now perhaps, too late to object to the plan or the style of the buildings. That is a matter of opinion upon which the best men may differ. But can any man, any high minded Virginian, say that the finishing touch should not be given, after so much has been expended, and such high expectations have been excited at home and abroad ? We cannot believe it. What will the son of Bolivar, now an inmate of the University, say to his noble countrymen, of Virginia patriotism, consistency ; of Virginia pride and liberality, if the small sum now asked shall be refused ! We understand that no further appropriation will be wanted in future ; that after the completion of the Rotunda and Anatomical Hall, the resources of the institution will be adequate to any further additions or expenses.
Far be from us any exclusive attachment to the University. We are the enthusiastic friends of the Primary Schools. and of Academies. Why should not the Legislature appropriate $25,000 of the last sum received of the U. S., to the University ; and to several Academies, (which have the strongest claims) 10 or 12,000 dollars, in addition to the funds which they are able to produce ?-- Without excellent Academies, it is impossible that the University can develope half the improvement, of which it is susceptible. Minds must be well trained beforehand, to reach the goal which it opens to their view.
