London, Aug 26.—In a new attack on a four mile front along the Scarpe between Fampoux and the heights northeast of Neuville-Vitasse, the British arrived at the old Hindenburg line at 3 o'clock this morning. Here at the Wotan section they captured both Monchy-le-Preux and Guemappe, their progress making two miles deep within a few hours. It is also reported that they have captured Wancourt and Carnoy. East of Henin and Mory they made good progress. Haig announced the capture of Favreuil. On both sides of the Somme the British also advanced, and toward Maricourt. Strong enemy counters last night around Bapaume were repulsed. The total British casualties in the third and fourth armies for the period from Wednesday to Sunday are estimated to be 23,000. During the same period the British took 20,000 Germans prisoners.
