FROM NIAGARA.

From the Buffalo Gazette, of Tuesday, October 18

Since our last, about 500 Light Dragoons, Artillerists and Infantry have passed this for the northern army, in Canada. Brig. Gen. Winder, and suite, Col. Fenwick, and many other officers have also passed on. On Monday week, the army of Maj. General Izard, moved from Lewiston, and crossed the Niagara at Black Rock. The General when joined by the distinguished army of Major General Brown, passed down the Niagara. The following extract of a letter is all the direct intelligence we have from the army. We, however, learnt from the writer of the letter, that preparations were complete for crossing the Chippawa yesterday morning.

Extract of a letter to the Editor of the Buffalo Gazette, dated "Chippawa Plains, Oct. 16."

"You may have heard of the firing at Chippawa yesterday: The occasion was simply this: our artillery, was advanced to a point of wood, within about 300 yards of their works, and opened upon them; they returned the fire from four different batteries, which were constrained to be silent by our firing, for about an hour, and then ceased. They drew back the principal part of their troops—and, after losing a few men and horses, hid the rest."

A considerable body of Volunteers from the states of Kentucky and Ohio have arrived at Detroit, commanded by Gen. McArthur, of the regular army.

From the Buffalo Gazette.

TO THE EDITOR.

"Chippawa Plains, Oct. 16, 1814."

"I enclose you a correct copy of an order found in an orderly book of the British 6th regt. left in one of their Bivouacs, near Fort Erie."

Head-Quarters, Camp before Fort Erie, 5th Aug, 1814.

Lieut. Gen. Drummond has received the report of the officer, to whose direction the force passed to the right bank of the river on the night of the 2d inst. was consigned. The indignation excited in the mind of the Lieut. General, from discovering that the failure of an expedition, the success of which, by destroying the enemy's means of subsistence, would have compelled his force on this side, to have surrendered to the troops by which he is invested, or by risking an action with the Lieut. General in the field, to have met certain defeat, has been solely caused by the misbehavior of the troops employed on this honorable service, will not permit him to expatiate on a subject so in military and disgraceful. He has only to intimate therefore, that as it is to the officers that the soldiers must ever look up for an example of intrepidity and devotion it is also the duty of all officers to punish with death on the spot any man under their command who may be found guilty of misbehavior before the enemy. To the troops most particularly alluded to it is the Lieut. General determination to afford an immediate opportunity of at once facing the enemy and redeeming in their own estimation, and in that of his officers mind the impression his own observations which have produced and of averting that report of their conduct which he shall feel indispensable to lay at the feet imperious of his sovereign duty. Couching ducking or laying down when advancing under fire, are bad habits, and must be corrected. The Lieut. General is happy to find, that the officers employed on the late expedition, appear to have done their duty.

By order of Lieut Gen Drummond.
H. Harvey, Lt. Col. Depy Adj Gen.
