Extract of a Letter from Charles-Town, in South-Carolina, dat. April 2, 1752.
"Last Saturday arrived here twenty Lower Creeks, ten Upper Creeks, and eleven Cherokee Indians. The Visit was unexpected to me as well as to ourselves. The two Creek Nations were at Peace with each other, but the Lower Creeks at implacable Enmity with the Cherokees. As soon as they met, they drew in Order of Battle at the old School House, where the Creeks had pitched before the Arrival of the others, and with much ado were prevented from fighting. On this the Cherokees, being much inferior in Number, betook themselves to the Protection of the Government, and were secured in the Guard House. The Governor attempted a Reconciliation between them and a Kind of Truce was made, between them Yesterday. And the Creeks promised that they would not follow the others in two Days. About an Hour before Sun set the Cherokees set out by Way of Path (the only Road which leads up between the two Rivers) and about 4 Miles out of Town were intercepted by the Lower Creeks, who killed three on the Spot, the rest they pursued, and it is thought that five will have escaped, tho' there is not Certainty of more than one. After the Fight the Lower Creeks made off to Ashley Ferry, where they arrived, and crossed over about Midnight."
but whether with one, three, or no Prisoners, is not certain. So various and uncertain are the Accounts. Some Soldiers are sent after them, but there is little Probability of their coming up with them. [went?] to See the Dead; one old Man had his Throat cut: but I could find no Wound he had besides; one was shot thro' the Body, and his Head was cut off; and the third shot thro' the Arm, and thro' the Body, and all three scalped.
