NEW YORK, (AP) - Joseph P. Selly, president of the American Communications association (CIO) announced today that the threatened Western Union Telegraph strike had been postponed one week until Oct. 30.
Selly's announcement followed an appeal from deputy mayor Thomas L. J. Corcoran saying extension of the contract was necessary because any interruption of service was "unthinkable" while the city was host to the United Nations.
The strike of 7,000 Western Union employees, which would have cut off New York City from virtually all telegraphic communication with the rest of the nation, had been scheduled for midnight tonight.
