The Legislature of this State met at Harrisburg, on Thursday last, 7th inst. Finley Patterson was elected Speaker of the House, and Wm. R. Wilcox Speaker of the Senate. Our old friend Wm. Jack, formerly editor of the Pittsburgher, was nominated for Clerk of the House in caucus, but when the election came into the House, Bright, of Northumberland, and Struthers of Carbon, elected as democrats, did not vote for him, in consequence of which no election took place: E. S. Goodrich, editor of the Bradford Reporter, was elected Clerk of the Senate.
[We have later news from Harrisburg, by which we learn that Mr. Jack has been elected clerk of the House. Glad of it.]
Gov. Porter's message occupies about five columns of the "Union." From the message we learn that the whole amount of public debt at this time is $40,835,013 60. The interest on the State debt, during the whole period of Gov. Porter's administration, amounts to the enormous sum of $10,362,186. The receipts into the Treasury, during the fiscal year, ending on the 30th November last, including a small available balance from the previous year, were $2,511,237. The expenditures for the same time amounted to (including relief notes cancelled) $1,847,385. Leaving a balance in the treasury on that day, of $663,852. The Governor says:
"It must be gratifying to every Pennsylvanian to reflect that the credit of this great State, which has been, for upwards of two years, subjected to reproach, will thus be restored to the unsullied purity of character which, until this unavoidable reverse of fortune, she had steadfastly maintained. The claims of all her honest creditors will be punctually discharged, and the gross imputations which have been heaped upon her name wiped out, and the abiding confidence which we have ever felt in the disposition and ability of the State to comply with all her engagements, will be fully realized."
