Upon a retrospect on the present contest between Great Britain and the United States of America, the beneficence of the Deity towards us has been so conspicuous, that we cannot behold it but with admiration and gratitude. No year, perhaps, since the commencement of the present war, was ushered in with a more sable and gloomy aspect to the interest of this country than the present. The year commenced with a scene that was truly shocking, and was shortly followed by another of a similar nature. These casualties seemed to be collecting into one general aggregate mass of national calamity, and to threaten our cause with ruin and destruction; but the tables were soon turned, and matters brought into a train of adjustment.
The 17th of January opened the glorious scene, and was the first check that the British southern army met with; but after that in almost every rencounter, they were worsted by our troops, until the conclusion of the campaign, which has terminated with such signal success and so much honor to our arms.
