MAIMED IN A SLEEPER.

Four Persons Seriously Injured in a
Rear End Collision at Harrisburg.

HARRISBURG, PA., Jan. 21.—A repetition
of the awful Dock street accident on the
Pennsylvania railroad in this city last sum-
mer, occurred at Docklow, the first station
east of Steelton, this morning about 4
o'clock. The fast line east, which leaves
here at 3:45 o'clock, stopped on the block to
repair the air brake. which was out of
order, when the second section crashed into
the rear. demolishing the Williamsport
sleeper, in which were four passengers. The
car caught fire from the locomotive of the
second section and was partially destroyed.
Prof. Henry W. Rolfe. assistant profes-
sor of English literature in the University
of Pennsylvania, was seriously hurt.
Arthur A. Stern, a wholesale jeweler of
New York, was injured about the hips.
Two others were also hurt.
Prof. Rolfe was doubled up between the
upper and lower berths and was almost
suffocated by the escaping steam. Mr.
Stern climbed through the window with
nothing to protect him from the bitter cold
but an undershirt. It is said that the
operator at Steelton is responsible for the
accident for allowing the second section to
enter the block before the first section had
left it. All the physicians in the city were
aroused, the first report being that eighteen
were killed and many injured.
Eight passengers were injured. All ex-
cept Rolfe and Stern proceeded to their
destination on a special train with other
belated passengers. The Steelton operator
has admitted his carelessness in allowing
the second section to enter the block.
