Good Templar Contests.
The Good Templars have begun a series of contests in their lodge room, and the first contest was given last evening under the direction of Miss Willsey, and Miss Wood is now preparing for another to be given next Monday evening. Last night a young lady read the following original poem, written at an hour's notice:
OUR LODGE,
On the plains of South Dakota
Where the wild winds rage and roar,
Where rain is a total stranger
And the dust flies evermore,
There was once a lovely city
Filled with people good and kind,
Who to squelch the liquor traffic
Very strongly were inclined.
So in order to accomplish this,
The people of the place
Organized a templar's lodge
Which left the traffic in the lurch.
To this lodge when it started
Flocked the people great and small
So the people at each meeting
Nearly filled the templar's hall.
In this lodge, for entertainment,
A friendly contest was proposed
And the lodge in two divisions
Of the members was composed.
At two each succeeding meetings
One of each of these divisions
Gave a program in which every
Feature counted 'gainst provisions.
In this contest every poem
Known to be original
Counted much for the composer
Or the side on which he fell.
So we hope that this poor effort
Which 'mongst epics would not thrive
Will in this most desperate contest
Count our side a seventy-five.
