WRITTEN FOR THE STANDARD.
BY AMANDA.
The hand of Autumn scatters o'er
The forest many a brilliant hue;
Its variegated beauties pour
Increased delight upon the view.
But ah, this loveliness is brief.
'Tis only to precede decay :
The winds enamored of the leaf,
Snatch it, and leave the naked spray
The Swan upon Cajester's wave
An hundred years in silence dwells;.
His downy breast the waters lave
Yet not a note that bosom swells.
But when his dying hour is near,
A tuneful voice the Swan assumes,
Cajster's banks enchanted hear—
But death has seized those snowy plumes.
Thus are the good: with human ill
Their virtues are o'er clouded here;
But when the pulse of life grows still
Their imperfections disappear.
A radiance then around them beams,
'Tis poured from the celestial gate,
Which ope'd in expectation seems
Their rising spirits to await.
