" I have this morning been favored with a perusal of yours of the 9th inst. to our friend. . I am happy to find that congress are taking measures for the punishment of such persons as shall in future dare to assume to themselves the right of exercising powers, which the people by their constitution have placed in other hands. It is surely a matter of the greatest importance to the happiness of our country to prevent by law the improper interference of any person, who, whether influenced by good or bad motives, may rashly interpose himself between our own and a foreign government, and thereby commit the best interests of our country. I am inclined to believe that Logan has been used merely as a tool in the late affair, and has been urged, not so much by any hope of doing good or bad, as by his vanity. I hope the curtain will yet be raised, and that the real actors behind it, will be seen."
