On Sunday last arrived at English Harbour in his Majesty's Ship the Winchester (the Cambridge of 80 Guns Capt. Barnet, the Buckingham of 74, Capt. Tyrrel, arrived Trident of 64, Capt. Jeff. being sent on a Cruise) Commodore Moore, who is appointed Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's Ships station'd, and to be station'd at Barbados, and the Leeward Islands: Several Merchantmen bound for these Islands, and Jamaica, came under his Convoy; the Captains of which unanimously declare, that the Commodore took extraordinary care of the Fleet during the whole Passage: Antigua now flatters herself not only with having a faithful Protector of her Trade, but also a just and resolute Revenger of those Depredations, which have been so daily committed by the French within a Mile or two of her own Harbours.
With the Fleet arrived the Falkner Packet, Capt. John Humphry: who on Thursday the 1st of Sept. at 7 o'Clock in the Evening, about 22 leagues to windward of Barbados, fell in with a French Schooner Privateer of 14 carriage guns, and about 140 Men: The Schooner engag'd her for four glasses the same Evening (almost yard arm and yard arm during the whole Time) but was obliged to sheer off, being greatly damaged in her Rigging and Sails: At 10 o'Clock the next Morning, she attacked the Packet again, who gallantly fought her for four glasses more, during which Time the Privateer was often hull'd betwixt Wind and Water, and had her Fore sail and Main Gaft shot away; and was forced to sheer off a second Time: At one o'Clock she made a third Attack, (hoisting a bloody Flag and shewing her stink pot at the Bowprit end) and ordered the Packet to strike; who wou'd not, but fought her for two glasses, in which Time the Privateer received very great Damage, and lost many of her Men; this drove the rest from their quarters, and disappointed them of all hopes of succeeding in a fourth attack on the gallant Capt. Humphry, and his brave Crew, who got safe into Barbados the next Day about 1 o'Clock. Capt. Humphry had 8 carriage Guns, and 26 Hands.
