ABATE THE NUISANCE.
The city council should take some action to abate the street sweeping nuisance. The streets of the city should be swept nightly, but the manner in which this work is being carried out at this time is annoying, unhealthy and absolutely unnecessary. Each night the sweeper goes through the downtown and residence districts and stifling clouds of dust follow in its path. The dust is thrown into the windows and doors of business houses and residences, and unless pedestrians and others flee they are subjected to most unhealthy conditions. The streets should be sprinkled late at night, before the sweeper is taken out to accomplish its work, and the sweeper could be operated without annoyance. Throwing dust and debris from the streets into homes and residences spreads diseases and is of little benefit from street-sweeping.
The Graphic urges the council to abate the nuisance at the request of many citizens, who declare that the system is most unbearable.
