On our return home, we found our Contribution box filled to overflowing—our Subscribers preferring to lay them over for our own inspection, rather than take the responsibility of their insertion during our absence. On this account, several Communications have lost most of the interest they possessed at an earlier day, and are therefore too stale for publication at this late hour. Among this class is the glowing description of the 4th July at Old Point Comfort, &c., by our intelligent Petersburg Correspondent "S. D. H." We regret it was not inserted at the proper time.
Our paper to-day is almost entirely monopolized by the favors which had accumulated. They will be found unusually good, varied and attractive—well worthy of perusal by the busiest of our readers. We have still a large number on hand—of which the following are accepted and will appear next week, viz:—The well-written and thrilling story by "Rupert Rover;" "Benedick's" remarks to the Ladies on one of the errors of society. "Will: Wampum." "North Carolina," by "B. C.," &c.
We are truly thankful to our friends for their excellent contributions. Of the many we found on hand, nearly every one were highly creditable to the Authors, and such as we take pleasure in laying before our readers, satisfied they will be read with gratification by our thousands of subscribers.
This is the way to sustain the interest in a journal. Let all who are competent, favor us with their inditings, from various sections of the country— and thus improve themselves in the art of composition, and aid us in giving zest and variety to our columns.
