Carl Costello Attempts to Stab a Man Who Stops His Whipping a Woman.
Carl Costello was arrested in the block at 60 Canal-st. last night, charged with being drunk. The arrest was brought about by Mr. Dyson, of the Grand Rapids base-ball team, who rooms in this block, and called in Officer Fee to quiet a disturbance which Costello was raising.
Mr. Dyson stated to a TELEGRAM-Herald reporter last night after the arrest, that Costello has been living in the block with a woman to whom he is not married, and who supports him while he lays about drunk most of the time.
For several weeks Costello has been drinking alcohol, and has been in a half-crazed condition most of the time. Tuesday he was beating the woman with whom he lives, when he was stopped by Dyson, who lives in the same block. Last night he again started to whip the woman, and Dyson interfered, when Costello drew an ugly-looking knife from his hip pocket and attempted to cut Dyson, who disarmed him and called in the police.
The only charge now against Costello is drunkenness, but a more serious charge may be made.
