Last week in the Republican primary in California, Senator Shortridge was defeated for the United States senate nomination. This defeat is a significant one, being the fourth senator to be repudiated by voters since the Parker confirmation contest in the Senate. Information is given out that the colored voters of that state kept in mind the senator's stand favoring Judge Parker's nomination. These voters were determined to show their protest by voting solidly against him. The Senator is closely allied with the Republican administration and, in fact, has the ear of President Hoover. It is stated that he solely distributes the patronage in California, ignoring Senator Johnson. His defeat will be quite a blow to President Hoover whose bidding he did as shown by the Parker vote. The telling force of the Negro vote is being clearly indicated in opposition to those who attempted to force Judge Parker upon them. This, no doubt, may cause others to take notice and be less inclined to run counter to protests of these voters.
