No doubt, many of the present Juneau students will be surprised to learn that a literary club existed in J High as early as 1902. The organization was called the Seward Society in honor of William H. Seward, who took an active part in the purchase of Alaska.
The Seward Society might be compared to the Mummers Club of today, although the students of 1902 had more advantages. For one example, they were more active. They met every Friday and always had some kind of program to offer. New officers were elected every eight weeks, and one person could not hold the same office for more than two terms.
Among their forms of entertainment were debates, lectures, literary programs, and ordinary discussions of a current problem. The aim of the Seward Society was a fuller intellectual development.
