STATISTICS SHOW THAT THE PAYNE-ALDRICH LAW HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE.
Washington, Dec. 9.—That the Payne-Aldrich tariff law has tended to increase the trade between the United States and the Philippines is exemplified by figures compiled by the bureau of statistics. Permitting an interchange, free of duty, of practically all classes of articles passing between this country and the islands, trade between the United States and the Philippines has practically doubled.
The total value of imports from the islands for the first 15 months under the new law amounted to 24 1/3 millions of dollars against 11½ millions for the 15 months immediately preceding its enactment.
Exports to the island for 15 months since the new tariff has been in effect were valued at 23½ million dollars against 12½ million for the previous 15 months.
Philippines reports for the first quarter of the calendar year show that merchandise from the United States formed 21.6 per cent of the total imports against 14.8 per cent in the corresponding quarter of last year, the figures in each case being exclusive of imports by supply offices of the army, navy and insular and railway entries.
