State of education in various parts of the Globe.
Since the year 1789, up to 1820, there have been established in Europe [Denmark excepted] 4,000 schools, educating 200,000 children of both sexes; in Asia 50, with 20,000 children; in Africa 400, with 125,000 children; and in America 1,000, with 380,000; and in Australia, New South Wales, 10 schools, instructing 500 children.
[1830] the following has been the gradual increase of establishments for education on the Lancastrian system:——In Europe 10,600 schools, affording the rudiments of education; in Asia 1,000, with instruction to 700,000 children; in Africa 130 with 50,000 children; in America 1,000, with 380,000; and in Australia 100 schools, with 25,000 children.
By the above table it will be seen what exertions have been made to afford the poorer classes every possible means of instruction.
We know what number of works on education have been published for the improvement of the lower parts of Europe. They are as follows:—In Denmark 10; in Great Britain 189; in France 201; in Italy 1; in Spain 5; in Portugal 2; and in Greece 3.
The following is the present state of education in France. There are in Paris alone 112 schools kept by priests; 80 charity schools, with 12,000 children, of which 112 are gratuitous, instructing 25,582 pupils; 32 elementary schools which are supported by government; 118 boarding schools for boys, at which there are 7,669 children educated; 29 boarding schools for girls, in which there are 10,240; and for the higher branches of education, Mathematics, Philosophy, Latin, Hebrew, &c. 79 colleges, where 10,000 are instructed.
Greek, the oriental and living languages, the arts and sciences, there are twenty public establishments, most of which are supported, with 517 professors, and instructing 17,823 students. Thus making the number of persons receiving education in Paris, 73,222, forming about 1-10th of the whole population.
