Fanaticism
Run Mad Among
South Carolina Negroes.
COLUMBIA. S. C. Oct. 17.--Primus
Jones, colored, was killed Sunday morn-
ing at Sumter, S. C., in church.
A protracted meeting was being held
by the negroes at Beulah church. In a
perfect frenzy of fanaticism, Jones was
attacked and fatally injured by Rev. A.
H. Durant, the negro pastor, and Rich-
ard Campbell, a prominent member of
the church, because Jones had expressed
doubts about the supernal power of Dur-
ant to kill and restore to life.
A large number of Durant's congrega-
tion believed that he possessed supernat-
ural powers until his failure in this case.
Durant and Campbell are in jail.
