Yesterday afternoon, about 3:30 o'clock, Captain P. W. Pettis, of Leesburg, Va., superintendent of the cable road met with a very serious accident by being thrown from his buggy. Captain Pettis had gone up the road inspecting the work now in progress on it, and was returning to Georgetown, when his horse took fright and dashed into town by way of Seventh street, and when between Fayette and Frederick streets one of the shafts of the buggy broke, throwing the Captain violently to the ground, crushing his right ankle badly. The horse, after kicking the buggy to pieces, proceeded on his excursion up street, when he was captured, but not until he had injured himself considerably by his wild and bucks. Other vehicles, who resides near where the accident occurred, went to Capt. Pettis' assistance, pressed a private carriage, that was passing at the time, into service, and conveyed the injured man to the High Street Hospital, where his wound was dressed by Drs. O. Fulton and McL., after which he was sent to his home in Leesburg.
