SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 13.- (UP)-A $6,000,000 steel foundry built by Columbia Steel Co. to produce approximately 30,000 tons of steel castings annually was in operation today near Pittsburg, Calif.
The government has contracted Columbia to operate the new foundry for the duration of the war, the company said. The plant's output will be used primarily by the U. S. navy and maritime commission.
Company officials indicated full production will not be attained for several weeks because of skilled manpower shortages and delayed delivery of installations.
Plant facilities included two 25-ton basic health furnaces, and 18 electric cranes.
