THE CHECK RAISED
Arrest of Cyrus Jeffries, of Carmel, Ind., on a Serious Charge.

Cyrus Jeffries, of Carmel, Ind., was arrested yesterday upon complaint of J. L. Bieler, of the Anheuser-Busch local agency, charged with obtaining money by false pretenses. Jeffries delivered a load of hay to Bieler and payment was made upon the scale check presented. It was afterward discovered that the weight of the load had been increased one thousand pounds. Complaint was made and Jeffries came to the city yesterday and tried to settle the matter. He claimed the check was given to him by another man and that he did not change the figures and did not know it had been done.
