[From the Eagle.]

BEAUTY VANESCENT

THE rainbow, ting'd with various hue
Delights and fascinates the view;
But the bright beauties it displays,
Darken and vanish while we gaze.

Fair Chloe dreams, in soft repose,
Of dances, operas, billetdoux;
A world of bliss! but, luckless maid,
Soon as thou wak'st, the enchantment's fades.

The rose, that blooms, upon the bush
And meets the morning blush for blush,
Before the sun's meridian blaze,
Loses its lustre and decays.

What's beauty else! transient as glittering bows,
Or momentary dream, or withering rose

JOSEPH.
