Raleigh Track To Open Friday
RALEIGH - Official opening of the 1954 stock car racing season at the Raleigh Speedway was postponed until next Friday, April 23, when heavy rains forced cancellation of the scheduled program last Friday evening.
Seven events, three for amateurs and four for sportsmen, are set for the quarter-mile asphalt track next Friday night, with prize money totaling $1,500.
Starting time will be eight o'clock, but race fans are advised to come earlier in order to avoid traffic congestion and enjoy the pre-race warm-ups.
Fans are wondering if hard-driving Pee Wee Jones of Winston-Salem can repeat his inaugural race victory of last year. The tricky little driver, popular with fans here in 1953, will meet stiff competition in the Friday evening sportsmen's sprints.
Billy Myers of Winston-Salem, winner of last year's track championship, will be back next Friday, as will Shorty York, Mocksville; Curtis Turner, Roanoke, Va.; Bobby Myers, Ted Swaim and Tom Webster of Winston-Salem; Glen Wood, Stuart, Va., and a score of other top-notch performers.
Large starting fields are indicated for both the amateur and sportsmen's events.
Children under 12 will be admitted free when accompanied by parents.
