C. W. Nowell, collector for the Studebaker Wagon company of Salt Lake for the past 18 months was last night arrested in Ogden by Capt. Brown, at the request of Chief Lynch of Salt Lake. The man is wanted on the charge of embezzlement. It is alleged that he has misappropriated funds of the company, and among other things has made out checks payable to himself from the company. Two of these, one for $25 and one for $10 are in possession of the police, and will be used as evidence against him.
The Studebaker people here say that Nowell is an embezzler, as charged, and that his peculations have been going on for some time but just what amount has been taken cannot at present be stated, as the company has not yet got hold of his receipts. These will tell the tale. The matter of the checks is something the management of the company can throw no light on, and which the police will have to develop. Nowell is a married man, and lived in Denver court. His wife stated recently that she was going away, and it is not known at this date of writing whether she has left town or not.
