"I never knew of such a rush South in my life," said Mr. Keller. "More people have emigrated to the Southern States, and especially to Florida, in the past few months than for a year previously. A number of them are Eastern people, though the majority come from Chicago and the Northwest. The Southern country is gradually drawing the emigrants away from the West, as they are beginning to realize the fact that they can get better and more profitable land in the South for less money. Another thing that might be noted in connection with this is the fact that the majority of the Southern emigrants this year have been well to do.
"You can see here," he continued, drawing out a note book, "that more than 100 came in over our road last week from the northwest, bound for Florida, and more than two-thirds of them have gone there to live. The facilities for getting South are much better than those West, and a hundred other advantages exist which are generally pushing it forward."
