Full Text

The following is extracted from a letter received lately from a correspondent, as General Carleton has mentioned to General Washington in his letter, his full expectation that the Tories should have their lands restored--

Is not every Tory that is under arms against us, a murderer actually in design against us and GOD. in Num. 35. 31. 32. peremptorily repels this holy command, that no pardon be given nor satisfaction taken for a murderer. May GOD save the Congress from breaking this law in this case! --Shall we dare to hire the men with lands who have left them, joined our inveterate enemies, and themselves the most inveterate who fought against us for years past, and repeatedly fired on the ranks where stood their fathers, brothers and beneficed neighbours?--Some lenity might be given to those who fled through fear, and who bore no arms nor aided our enemies.
