Full Text

The proposition to appoint a Democrat to succeed Mr. Douglas in the U. S. Senate does not meet with favor at Washington. If this appointment was made it could only last until the meeting of the Illinois Legislature, and yet for this short time Republicans are not willing the departed statesman should be succeeded by other than an "irrepressible conflict man," and it may be considered as settled that only such person will be chosen by Gov. Yates. And yet this same Republican party are howling it through the Eastern States, that parties no longer exist—that parties and platforms have given way in order that the Union may be saved. How much of honesty and fairness there is in this cry is seen by the fact that when places are to be filled Republicans only are selected. The no party dodge is "played out," as the Republicans will find ere long.
