The New Police Force.

The new police force, elected on the 11th inst., to serve for two years, all having given bond in the sum of $250 each, which bonds had been approved by the Finance Committee of the City Council, were sworn into office by Mayor Smoot, this morning, and at once entered upon the discharge of their duties. The Mayor instructed the officers as to what was expected and required of them, and gave them excellent advice as to their conduct. During his remarks he said that it was reported that things were going on in the city in violation of the laws. He did not know that this was true, but if the police found that it was so, they must report the fact to him, and if they failed, they must take the consequences. He instructed them that in making arrests they must be prompt and fearless, but careful to exercise judgment. In cases where the officers made arrests for violation of law they must be careful to get evidence which would be good and sufficient at a trial. If they were uncertain as to their duties and authority they must consult him or the other city officers. He then distributed the police regulations to the men, and advised them to study them well.
