IS GIVEN FEDERAL POSITION HELD BY A. F. KEES OF WALLA WALLA.

Will Be Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue for This District Political Reward.

Collector of Internal Revenue B. D. Crocker has appointed J. M. Douglas of Walla Walla as deputy for this district, to fill the place now held by A. Frank Kees. Mr. Kees several days ago forwarded his resignation to Mr. Crocker, to take effect January 1, 1905.

Douglas is given the job in recognition of the services that he has rendered the republican party in Walla Walla county, having been one of its hardest workers for the past eight years.

The announcement of the appointment came as a surprise to most of the politicians in Walla Walla, as but very few were aware that Douglas was after the job.

The resignation of Kees and the appointment of Douglas lends color to the claim that has been made by a number of Walla Walla republicans that Kees was to be made warden of the state penitentiary. His friends still maintain that Kees has the "pull" on the job and that the ante-election promise made by Mead that the Walla Walla man was to have the position, it is claimed, is to be fulfilled.

Mr. Douglas leaves tonight for Tacoma to take the oath of office.
