By ELEANOR GUNN

New York-It was about Easter-time that women began to be petticoat-conscious. After that the craze for bright and rustling petticoats subsided, but now that autumn styles are here, back in the foreground comes the bright and rustling petticoat contributing a Gay 'Ninety aspect to the modern costume.

Some of the newest petticoats, or slips which appear to be petticoats, have saw tooth or scalloped hems. It's best to select such things with an eye to flagging attention, but one must, of course, see to it that the colors are not unfriendly to the costume. Most women have a yen for red or green petticoats but you may like the plaids, stripes, dots and checks in more than one color.

Browsing through the shops these days one is struck by the way belts are played up, the newest being wide, not to mention high, wide and handsome. They are going to make swell Christmas gifts - these new and decorative belts. Lanvin, Vionnet and Schiaparelli have done some stunning work on belts, bordering them being one detail which reminds me to mention that bordered effects, in general, are a bit better than good. Ever so many dresses and a good many coats, also suit jackets, are deeply bordered. Borders may be horizontal or vertical, and as every one must know, such placements of fur are particularly good just now.

Speaking of furs, beaver is one of the pelts in the process of being reinstated. It is very chic with beige and green and scores of women like it with black or with mixed tweed. There is also a tendency to revive squirrel - one of the humbler pelts.
