CELEBRATIONS.
Emancipation Day Continued
Yesterday afternoon the Salado celebration was attended by about 800 people and about the same number attended the celebration at San Pedro park. At both places there was considerable lack of enthusiasm and the event seemed to be less infused with life than in former years. At the Salado the day was spent in regular picnic style. There was no rowdyism or drunkenness and all was peaceable. At the springs the same order of things prevailed and there was no need of the many policemen who were detailed for duty.
Speech making occurred at both celebrations, and at the Springs dancing occupied nearly all of the time last night. A much larger crowd attended the celebration at the Springs last night, among which was a fair sprinkling of whites, who attended merely as spectators.
Today the celebrations are being carried on with the same vim that marked the actions of the participants yesterday. On the Salado, the music, lemonade drinking, speech making and singing resounds through the grounds, while at the Springs boat riding, ice cream eating, watermelon indulgence, dancing, etc., are the features. There was no public speaking this morning, but this afternoon two strangers will occupy the platform. The celebrations close with tonight.
