HALIFAX, JULY 4.
By his Majesty's brig Colpoys, we have received very unpleasant news from the Chesapeake. Three deserters from his Majesty's navy, and who had entered on board the U. S. frigate Chesapeake, were demanded by Mr. Erskine, of the American Secretary of the Navy, and were refused.
On the Chesapeake putting to sea, she was brought to, by the Leopard, the deserters again demanded, and three quarters of an hour given for compliance; but being again refused, force was resorted to; and it is with regret we learn, that three men were killed, and 20 wounded on board the Chesapeake, before the deserters were recovered.
The existence of Great Britain requires, that she do not permit the flag of any nation under Heaven to protect deserters from her navy, in time of war:--and it is a standing rule of the Navy Board, that the commanders of all British ships give up all deserters when demanded.
The intelligence of this interesting affair has been sent to England, in the Sylvia cutter of 10 guns, late Lt. S. Krumpholz.
To put a check to desertions from his Majesty's navy, a committee, consisting of Messrs. Andrew Belcher, John Pryor, James Foreman, Charles R. Prescott, and James Frazer, has offered a reward of Ten Guineas to any person who shall detect a harborer of such deserters, and Three Guineas for apprehending any deserter.
The Commander in Chief has given directions to press every man on board any vessel which shall harbor or conceal deserters from the navy.
