New York, January 6.—The city is full of contradictory rumors about the probable result of the assault by Frederick May upon James Gordon Bennett. Gossips have not yet even agreed upon the exact nature of the assault itself, and it is still a question whether Mr. Bennett received the blows from the whip or May's fist, or neither or both. The published reports are not unlike a scene in "The School for Scandal." Mr. Bennett's friends are divided between two equally positive opinions, one being to the effect that Mr. Bennett will be content with nothing less than blood, and the other that he has no intention whatever of provoking a fight; meantime betting men have profited by the occasion to lay wagers on the subject.
SUPPOSED PLACE OF MEETING.
New York, January 7.—The World of to-day says that a hostile meeting between Bennett and May will probably take place to-day. Frederick May and his cousin from Baltimore, who left New York Friday night, purchased tickets for Montreal, but it is probable some point this side of that city, but on the other side of the border, had been already selected and that Mr. Bennett was already in waiting there, having taken a train by the Northern railroad from Boston. This point, in all probability, is in the neighborhood of Stanstead, on the southern border of Canada, and just over the Vermont State line. Dispatches from Montreal make it certain that the parties did not go there.
The report that Mr. Bennett had secured the services of Gen. Richard Taylor as second proves to be unfounded. Gen. Taylor is confined to his room in Washington by a severe indisposition. It is possible that Mr. John Heckaber will act in that capacity, as he could not be found in the city last evening. Both Bennett and May have certainly left the city. An intimate friend of the two gentlemen said last night that there is little or no doubt that they will fight. Both are experts with the pistol, and that will undoubtedly be the weapon chosen. It is said that this latter point was agreed upon before Mr. May left the city.
Neither ex-Judge Gunning, S. Bedford nor Recorder Hatchett could be found last night at their residences, and a rumor was current that strenuous efforts will be made to arrange the affair amicably.
Another rumor was that Mr. Bedford and his brother, Dr. Bedford, had left the city to be present at the duel—the former as a second and the latter in his professional capacity.
A reporter of the Times called at Mr. May's residence last evening and had an interview with his father, Dr. Frederick May. The old gentleman was very much agitated and at first declined to converse on the subject of his son's whereabouts, but subsequently stated that he left home the previous evening. The Doctor had evidently been weeping, and his nervous depression and tremulous voice told but too plainly the solicitude he felt for his son.
BENNETT-MAY RUMORS.
New York, January 7.—It is rumored around the city to-day that James Gordon Bennett and Frederick May had fought a duel, but the rumor did not state the place of meeting. At the Union Club to-night, when the members were spoken to about it, they acknowledged having heard the report, but could give no particulars nor any reason why such a report could have been started. No telegrams in reference to the matter had been received there up to a late hour to-night.
Dr. May, the father of Frederick May, when spoken to about it this afternoon, stated that he had heard some rumors, but had nothing confirmatory or otherwise about them.
A gentleman who arrived from Baltimore to-day, says last night he saw Frederick May at the Maryland club in that city.
