Full Text

One of the best indications of future progress and prosperity for Yankton is the frequently expressed opinion that successful business centers are self-made—that is, the people who compose a community are the ones to build it up by public spirit and enterprise and by taking advantage of circumstances, the same as a business man does in his private transactions. There is a prevalent idea in the west that Providence, or fortune, or luck will drop a whole lap full of favors upon the particular spot upon which the hopeful ones exist, and that it will start upon a boom of endless prosperity. This seldom occurs, and when it does the mushroom quality of the growth very speedily asserts itself. Yankton has had its share of these evanescent hopes, but it is a gratification to notice that they are rapidly passing away and that our people are getting down to the more solid basis of good sense, which directs them to work for themselves and abandon their indulgence in visionary inanition. Improvement will surely come with well directed enterprise and public spirit, such as now developing in our midst.
