UNDATED, Nov. 5, (A) The political campaign of 1930 reached its climax yesterday when the general election took place throughout the country, completing the membership of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate who were up for re-election. Hundreds of minor officials also came up for election.
Republicans and Democrats both made Hoover the national issue, especially in reference to business decline, tariff, farm relief, and prohibition, to which was added local issues in various states.
Both sides saw the recession of Republican strength which arose in 1928 and also saw the scaling down of the Republican majority in Congress, perhaps to a point of Democratic control.
The Democratic members predicted a majority in the House and a reduction of the Republican majority in the Senate.
The heretofore undisputed territory where more than half the country's population lives including New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Ohio, were listed as doubtful.
Such was the consensus of opinion on an eleventh hour survey made by both parties.
Those interested in party strength and national opinion will be able to see by the returns which are starting to come in today, just how true those estimates were.
