New Government Project
May Further Increase
the Mileage
With completion of the first government paving project, Elizabeth City now has eighteen and a half miles of hardsurface thoroughfares, according to figures released Saturday by Mayor Jerome B. Flora.
Distributed among the wards, the pavement runs approximately four and one-third miles in the first, three and one-third miles in the second, over two and three-quarter miles in the third, and nearly five and one-third miles in the fourth.
Main and Road streets which divide the four wards together make up another two and six-tenths miles to bring the actual total of hardsurfaced roadways to 18.52 miles.
The government paving program was operated in two divisions, the first half being completed early in the spring, with the rest of the work carried to a finish a short time ago.
Because of the government aid there were added to the 20,500 feet of 14 streets in the first ward an additional 2,400 feet by paving parts of five more.
The second ward's 13,300 feet of seven streets were increased by 4,500 feet of government work on parts of five others, while to the 13,000 feet of old paving on seven streets in the third ward was added 2,200 feet of hardsurface spread over four thoroughfares.
Twenty streets already surfaced in the fourth ward totaled 22,000 feet, to which were added another 6,500 feet to cover parts of eight roadways.
Another paving project is under consideration by the city council to be submitted after the first of the year when it can be better determined what the federal government will do toward giving further grants to units of local government for civic improvements.
