Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Philadelphia. Feb. 23

A Committee of Merchants, of New-York, have advised our Merchants of their Intention of heartily joining the Eastern Governments, in soliciting a discontinuance of the most unjust of all Laws, the Sugar Act. Our People have had a Meeting and appointed a Committee to draw a Petition to our Assembly, requesting them to give their Agent Orders to go Hand in Hand with the other Governments, which they will readily come into; but I fear before our Several Petitions and Remonstrances can get home, that the Session will be over, and the Law extended to a further Time, with a little of its severity abated: for from Advices from London, by the last Packet, we learn, that some Friends to the North American Colonies are endeavouring to get us some Redress in this Affair; they say that the Duty on Molasses will be reduced to 2d. Sterling per Gallon: If they can do thus much without us, we might reasonably expect something more, were they strongly backed by all the North American Colonies.
