AMERICAN NOMINATIONS.
FOR PRESIDENT,
MILLARD FILLMORE.
OF NEW YORK.
FOR VICE PRESIDENT,
ANDREW JACKSON DONELSON
OF TENNESSEE.
Fillmore and Donelson.
Fillmore heads the column! and a very worthy and welcome heading it is, too. With two such purely national men as Fillmore and Donelson for standard bearers, the Americans of California open the campaign with exultant hearts and renewed courage, to do battle for the right, against every form of opposition. It has been said that the nominations were coldly received in California. So far as we have observed, no other name had been suggested by the American press of the State for the place so unanimously accorded Mr. Fillmore—and since the arrival of the Uncle Sam no American paper has come to hand without gratulations and rejoicings over the choice of the Philadelphia Convention.
Andrew Jackson Donelson, the protege and heir of the Hero of the Hermitage, elicits commendation from every quarter, for his manly and unblemished public life, and challenges the admiration of all but factionists, by the bold stand he has taken in these troubled times when stout hearts and clear heads are so much needed. Donelson is pledged to the defense of the Constitution and the Union, and courts favor of no extremists.
Both are tried national men, in contemplation of whom fanatics and secessionists should blush with conscious insignificance, and against whom the tongue of slander dare not wag. In making the selection, the convention avoided that reprehensible resort to expediency, which stoops to single out from among mental giants pigmies of the most indifferent caliber, whom an intelligent public is asked to honor, because a convention of ambitious politicians could not agree on a man of character It is to be hoped the course of the recent convention may be the initiative of a greater regard for the wishes of the people and the interests of the country, and less for the whims and preferences and demands of persistent demagogues.
There are taunts and jeers without stint hurled at the supporters of the American nominees. Democrats and Republicans point exultingly to the jarring and dissension that characterized the convention. These we frankly admit-and regret that such ebullitions of selfishness should have occurred-but the party is young, and will improve by training. The Know-Nothings had never been mustered in force for actual service. A national parade was had less than a year ago, but nothing practical was brought up for its action-nothing done in doing which conflicting interests and prejudices were aroused.
The "dark lantern party," with all its horrid oaths, obligations and rituals, has never been subjected to the rigorous discipline that prevails in the Democratic camp. By States we have worked harmoniously, and effectively-and by States we have been independent: even as individuals we have been subject to very little surveillance--have exercised a large discriminating liberty : and in scrutinizing the first efforts of a convention composed of such elements, " Something must be pardoned to the Spirit of Liberty! "
