Bale Raised on Johnson Farm by
Messrs. Johnson, Johnson and Galvan Weighed 573 Pounds.
Webb county's first bale of cotton, grown on the Johnson farm near Laredo by Messrs. S. N. Johnson, John Johnson and M. Galvan, and which was ginned at Cotton Gin Co. on Thursday morning, was sold yesterday to the Laredo Cotton Gin Co. at 36 cents per pound and a premium of 1 cent, making the total price of the bale aggregate $203.61.
The bale weighed 573 pounds and was classed as fair middling, 37 per cent lint. It has not as yet been announced where the bale will be shipped by the purchasers, but will likely be marketed in a short time.
Cotton picking generally will originate in many of the cotton fields of Webb county within the next week or ten days and then the fleecy staple will begin to roll into Laredo regularly and the gins of this city expect to be kept busy day and night throughout the season. It is estimated that about 30,000 bales of cotton will be raised and ginned in Webb county this year, most of it being of the Mebane long staple variety.
