HOLLYWOOD. Feb. 24.-(UP)-
'Round and 'round the floor bounced Lou Nova, his arms arched in front of him as he bounded from one side of the room to the other.
"I'm a kangaroo. I'm a kangaroo," he squawked, picking a flower out of a vase with his teeth and munching it down.
Yes, it was Lou Nova. prize-fighter. chicken fancier. movie actor, State Guardsman and now-a stage actor.
Lou was wiping the grease paint off his face when we caught him in his dressing room after the opening night of "Keep Your Distance."
He had just come off the stage where he had played the part of a punch-drunk fighter hypnotized by a big game hunter.
WON'T REVIEW IT
Now. we won't go into a review of the play. but we are forced to report one of the town's drama critics warned prospective customers to heed the warning of the title.
"Gosh. that flower didn't taste very good. but I guess it's all for the sake of art."
"You know. I'm serious about this acting business. I'm doing a picture with Kay Kyser. The only trouble is I get hypnotized in that one. too, and I'm afraid of being typed."
Lou. you'll recall, has hit several new highs and lows for daffiness in his pugilistic training routines. There was that time he took on a Yogi complex and demonstrated for all who would look and listen that he underwent complete relaxation by standing on his head.
Later he shelved that one for a serious dissertation on a "cosmic" punch he had originated to knock out Joe Louis. It seemed to be a fine idea. although no one understood it. but when he fought Joe it let him down-on the canvas, knocked out in the sixth round.
"Aw. I've put all that zany stuff away now," said the California athlete. "I'm going to concentrate on a movie career. But I don't want to play fighter parts. I want to gain my fame as. a character actor."
