We heartily endorse the article in the Standard on this subject. The city authorities should move in this matter. The convenience and the interest of the city of Jackson requires the speedy erection of a bridge over Pearl river, and we are surprised that our "city fathers" have been so far wanting in enterprise as to have neglected this important undertaking. The trade of Rankin county is of more importance to Jackson than that of Hinds. Planters in the western and southern part of Hinds trade to Vicksburg or New Orleans—while Jackson should be the market for the greater part of Rankin. Besides Rankin, there are several eastern counties, Simpson, Covington and Smith that used to trade largely with Jackson, and would do so again if there was a free bridge over Pearl river and proper inducements held out to them by our merchants. No time should be lost, but the bridge put under contract, so as to be ready for the fall trade.
There are other city improvements that we desire to see inaugurated by our worthy Mayor and Aldermen to which we will allude hereafter. As it is, we are completely cut off from the wagon trade of these eastern counties. Even before the cotton crop comes in, Jackson would be an excellent market for their country produce, while their supplies could be furnished here cheaper than at any other point so convenient. As it is, this valuable trade now goes to Brandon and other railroad towns.
