Event Details
A Clerk in the Treasury Department named Raymond P. Dowden was arrested on Thursday last, charged with the embezzlement of certain cancelled Treasury notes. He was employed for the last week or two in assisting in placing on the returned notes additional and stronger marks of cancellation to those borne by them when returned to the Treasury, and had, it appears while in the discharge of this duty, abstracted five $100 dollar notes, with holes cut in them as the mark of being cancelled, and had sent them to a female in Baltimore named Mrs. Augusta A. Dorsey, residing in Lombard street, to pass away: but she failed in the attempt, with the exception of one note, which she sold to a broker.
