Letter from Washington.

Washington, D. C., Nov. 24, 1885.

Editors Register.—The politicians are considerably interested and amused at the little struggle of cross purposes between the bachelor President and the bachelor Governor of New York. Mr. Sterling, of Brooklyn, was appointed by the former to a place in the custom-house and then removed very shortly after, to the great disgust of his friends. At this juncture Gov. Hill steps in and appoints Mr. Sterling to the State office of Port Warden, an office of higher distinction and better pay than the Federal office of which he was so suddenly deprived.

Sir John A. Macdonald, the Canadian premier, instead of staying at home to listen to the brow-beating and behold the effigy-burnings by Louis Riel's admirers, is taking a trip to Britain. Riel and Theebaw have been alike in this, they failed to take into account the necessity which lays upon established governments of maintaining their prestige at all hazards.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad has a hard time with its effort to get to New York. It is doubtful if the roundabout route by Staten Island will answer, and then as to building across New Jersey that State is too much in the interest of the rival Pennsylvania road to grant a charter. It is evident that the problem is yet a good way from solution.

The latest news from the seat of war in the Balkan States is quite favorable to the Bulgarians, who seem, indeed, to have got the "bulge" on their enemies. The whole thing ought to be put a stop to without delay. Russia is sorely disgusted because the war began without her starting it, and Austria is disappointed because she hoped through Servian success to have got the port of Salonica on the waters of the Levant. Servian failure is therefore grit between Austria's teeth.

We have news from the English elections, showing returns from a number of places, but as yet it is too early for comparison of results. Lady Churchill, the American wife of the Secretary for India, assisted by the Duchess of Marlborough, has canvassed the great town of Birmingham as it never was canvassed before. They have associated with them three hundred ladies known as "Primrose Dames," each of which takes a section and makes reports thereto to a central executive committee. The candidates for Parliament for Birmingham are Lord Randolph Churchill and the renowned statesman and Quaker, John Bright; one Tory, the other Liberal.

A severe fight yesterday between the Burmese and the British Indian troops took place in a jungle where the former were strongly posted, but upon being closely pressed the Burmese fled in all directions.

A proper degree of consideration for the due enjoyment of Thanksgiving pervades the several Departments, and the employees have been paid in advance of the 1st of the coming month, so that turkey and mince pie may be comfortably within reach. May the Register and all thereunto belonging and appertaining enjoy to the fullest.
