lying, is a veritable myth, a correspondent of the Boston Journal states that he was one of the guests at dinner at Brooklyn last Monday, at which General Grant was present.

The General talked very freely on all the subjects that were broached. The writer says that in the latter part of the evening some remark was made about Mentor, when the General said, looking me right in the face with his frank, clear eyes:

"The reported bargain at Mentor is not true. There was nothing said to Garfield, but that which was said was in the presence of a large number of people, for we were surrounded by a crowd, and there was no private interview sought or held. There was no bargain whatever."
