Rare Astronomical Drama
As Mercury Crosses Sun

NEW YORK. (AP) The planet Mercury moved across the sun Saturday in a rare astronomical drama last seen in its entirety from the United States in 1894.

The event, known as the "transit of Mercury," occurs with Mercury passing directly between the earth and the sun in essentially the same manner as the moon does in an eclipse of the sun.

Mercury, the smallest planet in the solar system, is too small for the naked eye to see it against the blazing sun.

For those using telescopes, it appeared as a tiny black dot.

The transit will next occur on Nov. 6, 1960.
